Choosing a Name

small WuLi logo

When choosing a name for our web site and software business in 1996, we were looking for a name that was available from Demon (our ISP), short, and which wouldn't be confused with anybody else. At the same time, we wanted a name which appealed to us both in meaning and appearance.

WuLi

The name "Wu Li" was popularised by a book called "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" by Gary Zukav. His book describes modern physics in terms which are easily understood by the non-technical reader, and points out parallels between these ideas and eastern mysticism.

There are several different pronunciations of Wu Li in Chinese, each with a different symbol and meaning, but spelled and pronounced the same in English. Some of these meaning are :

  • Physics
  • (hence the name of the book)
  • Patterns of Organic Energy
  • My Way
  • Nonsense
  • I Clutch My Ideas
  • Enlightenment
Several of the above meanings seemed appropriate (our symbol refers to a particular meaning) - there's also a pun on "woolly" software, and it sounds like part of our old postal address!

WuLiSoft

Originally trading as WuLi Software, we now use WuLiSoft as a shorter, easier to remember name which coincides with our web address - www.wulisoft.com
